SMT Divergence

Step 1

What it is

Some markets usually move together, such as EUR/USD and GBP/USD. SMT divergence is when one of them makes a new low or high and the other does not. The name comes from "smart money technique", a label from online trading education rather than an established term.

The idea is that the market that refused to confirm may be showing real strength or weakness. These relationships are only tendencies, and they can break down for ordinary reasons, such as news that affects just one currency.

Traders use it as extra evidence at a level they were already watching. It should never be the only reason for a trade.

Step 2

See it on a chart

EUR/USD makes a new low. GBP/USD does not.

Step 3

The exact rules

What must be true before entry

  • Two markets that normally move together.
  • One takes out a clear swing while the other does not.
  • The market you are trading then closes past its last swing point.

What volume should show

Compare volume on both markets at the key level. A new extreme on falling volume adds a little weight to the idea, but it does not confirm it.

Where to enter

On the pullback into the lower half of the move after the shift, or the upper half for a short.

Where the hard stop goes

A hard stop past the new extreme on the market you are trading.

Where the target goes

Aim for a clear objective that offers at least 3:1. If the nearest realistic objective gives you less, there is no trade.

What invalidates the idea

  • The second market goes on to confirm with its own new extreme.
  • Price trades past your stop level.

When not to take it

  • News has affected only one of the two markets.
  • There is no shift yet, only the divergence.
  • Major news is due soon, or you would be trading outside your planned hours.
  • You have just taken a loss and feel the need to win it back.

Step 4

Your turn: plan the trade

EUR/USD has made a new high and GBP/USD has not. EUR/USD then broke structure to the downside and has pulled back. Mark your plan on the top chart.

This setup is a short. Look at the candles and the volume. Choose a line below, then tap the chart to place it. You can also drag its label or type a price.

Step 5

The trap: collecting reasons

One more chart, one more confirmation, one more tab. Extra signals feel like safety, but they mostly make you more sure of a trade that carries exactly the same risk. A trade with five reasons can still lose. Your size should never grow because your story did.
